"Known for his works that use a sense of humor to convey the deeper elements of his teachings, Sengai was a member of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. The Idemitsu collection — collated by Sazo Idemitsu, the first director of the museum — and the Fukuoka Art Museum and Kyushu University, School of Letters collections are considered the finest archives of Sengai’s work, both in quality and quantity. To commemorate Sengai’s 150th memorial and the 50th anniversary of the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, this exhibition brings together all three collections for the first time since 1986 to present 132 of Sengai’s works."-- The Japan Times.
