The book shows a cross-section of modern movements and tells the story of these special women, placing their choices within the spirit of the times. Well-known and lesser-known artists are discussed, including Charley Toorop, Jacoba van Heemskerck, Else Berg, Lou Loeber, Alida Pott, Anna Sluijter and Jemmy van Hoboken.
