The triumph of painting

Uittreksel

"The Triumph of Painting, the title of a three-part landmark exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in London, refers to painting as the fundamental root of artistic expression. At the start of the twenty-first century, when every possible medium is valid as a creative means and the artistic options are endless, we are in fact witnessing the vigorous reassertion of painting. Unlike previous painting traditions, painting in Europe in the nineties advanced with new and wider references to the whole realm of visual culture, embracing architecture, advertising, cinema, fashion and, in particular, photography. The first part of The Triumph of Painting contains the work of the most influential artists of the present European generation beginning with the late Martin Kippenberger, followed by Peter Doig, Luc Tuymans, Marlene Dumas, Jorg Immendorff and Hermann Nitsch. The second part encompasses the work of such outstanding figures as Dana Schultz, including her remarkable Face Eater, with its allusions to Picasso and Bacon. Beside Schultz, this part presents established figures such as Daniel Richter, Cecily Brown, Dexter Dalwood, TAL R, Michael Raedecker, Kai Althoff, Franz Ackermann, Thomas Scheibitz, Wilhelm Sasnal and many others. A third section opens up the work of the most exciting of the emerging younger painters, whose influences can in many cases be traced directly back to the work in the preceding parts. The Triumph of Painting is the first publication to make the vital currents of this new art coherent. [...] The Triumph of Painting will define how painting has not only survived into the new century in the face of the barrage of imagery from other media, but it will demonstrate how painting has absorbed that imagery, reshaped it in its own central domain and touched us profoundly"--Jacket.
