Based on original research, this book presents a comprehensive survey of the region's stained glass of the period c.1300-1700. A comprehensive gazetteer includes all known surviving stained glass before 1700 and illustrates important glass in around 100 churches, including rare late thirteenth-century panels of medallions at Madley, stunning images of the Virgin and Child and Archangels at Eaton Bishop and the magnificent assemblage of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century glass at Ludlow. The important later medieval workshops in Coventry, York and Oxford also had influence and presence in the county, and are, for the first time, fully plotted in this survey. The early seventeenth century churches associated with Viscount John Scudamore were fitted with startling glass of singular character, now reconsidered with the discovery of sources for their inspiration.
