In toenemende mate duiken in het huidige kunstdiscours concepten als idealisme, avant-garde, utopie, hoop, 'committment', vrijplaats, engagement en autonomie op. Het zijn begrippen die ons herinneren aan het moderne verleden. Maar vanwaar het plotse hergebruik van dit vocabulaire? In hoeverre is er hier sprake van een bewuste herformulering? Wordt het modernistische denken wellicht strategisch ingezet om de huidige band met politieke idealen te herstellen? Is het thans aan een avant-gardistische kunst om de ontmenselijkte publieke ruimte opnieuw te politiseren? Het zijn deze vragen die het uitgangspunt vormden voor een reeks dinsdagavond discussies die voorjaar 2005 onder de titel Modernity Today in De Appel (Amsterdam) plaatsvonden. De thematiek werd op iedere avond vanuit een ander perspectief benaderd. Bijdragen van : Jane & Louise Wilson, Patricia Pisters, Jos de Mul, John Körmeling, Mathieu Mercier, Sean Snyder, Dominic van den Boogerd, Liam Gillick. Concepts such as idealism, avant-garde, utopia, hope, commitment, sanctuary, involvement and autonomy are cropping up increasingly in the current discourse on art. These are terms that remind us of the modern past. But why the sudden reemployment of this vocabulary? To what extent can this be seen as a conscious reformulation? Is modernist thinking perhaps being applied strategically in order to restore the modern-day link with political ideals? Is it now down to avant-garde art to re-politicise the dehumanised public space? These are the questions that formed the starting point for a series of Tuesday evening discussions that took place at De Appel (Amsterdam), Spring 2005, under the title Modernity Today. The subject matter was treated from a different perspective every evening.
