Uittreksel

"The first chapter of the book provides an overview of Lublinský's life and complete works. The following chapter deals more closely with his graphic designs. The third chapter pays special attention to Lublinský's role as a highly esteemed designer of thesis prints--costly graphic announcements of university Bachelor, Master or Doctoral defenses. Such thesis prints were produced for an intellectual milieu and required an abundant and original imagery with complex allegorical themes. The 'iconographical vocabulary' of the thesis prints, their patterns and rules are explained in the fourth chapter. Lublinský's inventiveness and originality in this field is highlighted. The next chapter, comprising catalogue entries of individual works, reveals the literary and artistic sources that Lublinský employed. [...] The final chapter provides an overview of the research on Lublinský and outlines his critical reception and posthumous reputation. [...] The number of Lublinský's attributed works has increased notably during recent years. The largest part of the book is a comprehensive catalogue of all known prints designed by Lublinský. The catalogue also includes a listing of his sketches and more finished drawings related to prints. Each catalogue entry offers a detailed iconographical analysis and information on the commission. Thesis prints make up the core of the catalogue. The ambitiousness of composition and the sheer amount of these prints show Lublinský's adaptabilty and skill as a designer. At present we know of almost forty thesis prints executed after his designs. Attention is also given to book illustrations and frontispieces, devotional prints, portraits and almanacs (Wappenkalender). Lublinsky was also an occasional etcher and produced a series of emblem plates within elaborate ornamental cartouches, although these are exceptional within his oeuvre and only one more etching is known. The catalogue is closed with several engravings probably designed by Lublinský and a listing of lost prints"-- English summary (pages 357-358).
