  First edition of this scarce painting manual which contains the earliest known engraving of a palette. ‘This treatise on painting had a tremendous influence in its time’ (Birren, The History of Colour in Painting, pp. 44-45). It was also one of the earliest books which gave practical information about the working methods of painters in France; see Schmid, The Practice of Painting, p. 47.
