"NMTH's exhibition Transcending 1624: Taiwan and the World offers a perspective that differs from the conventional narrative of the past. It reflects on the connection and development of the island of Taiwan and world history before and after the contact between people of Taiwan and the Dutch in 1624 from the perspective of practical concerns of Taiwan today. We no longer need to look at this portion of history from the perspective of the West or to listen to a single narrative. Instead, we focus on Taiwan as the principal subject and ground our understanding in the grassroots viewpoints of the land and its people, transcending the dynastic and the official view of history as we rethink and reposition Taiwan's role in the world. This is also NMTH's mission and mandate as a national museum. Through research and discussion, exhibition and promotion, we provide a channel for local and international visitors to learn about Taiwan history. In this special exhibition, NMTH has demonstrated the expertise of a national museum. This requires patience of researchers as they examine historical materials and artifacts. It necessitates communication and exchanges of exhibits between different countries as well as close integration of cultural contents and technological applications using highly refined display technologies, demonstrating the achievements of scientific and technological innovations in tandem with the dissemination of knowledge"-- Shi Zhe, foreword (page 3).
