"Being a significant expression of the traditional Chinese culture, ink painting remains a fascinating medium within the domain of contemporary arts. The artists show their concerns and respects to such tradition, some carry it on, some try to change it. The large variety of ways of interpretation and expression has made it one of the most appealing genres of our time and make it an essential part of our culture. It is correct to say that since 1980s, which has been a most prosperous period, ink painting has been developed rapidly. During this period however, many questions have also been raised. The International Ink Painting Biennial of Shenzhen has focused on establishing a profound and systematic display of the achievements in the field of ink painting. The six biennials (namely, the four biennials held in year 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004 and the two International Ink Painting Exhibitions held in 1988 and 1992) and the related forums held in the last 18 years represent our research on the status quo of ink painting and on its future possibilities. As a review of the previous biennials and also as a demonstration of the trends of contemporary ink painting, the 5th biennial will be composed of four sections, induding Design & Ink Painting; Heritage & Ink Painting; Ink Painting, Life & Taste; Singapore Modern Ink Painting. Further, the exhibition National Metropolis Ink Painting Exhibition, which is a cooperation with the Chinese Artists' Association and the Shenzhen Municipal Government, will be part of the biennial too."-- [Volume 1], page 113.
