Milanese mandoline
Domenico Brambilla, 1768
This six-course mandolin presents all the features of Milanese mandolins made in the second half of the 18th century. The front is one piece near quarter cut spruce with the growth direction from the bass towards the treble. The sound hole is encircled by a double strip of dark wood purflings. The rose is lost. The front of the bridge is decorated with ivory and mother-of-pearl inlays. The bowl consists of ribs of ebony, with shallow fluting that alternates with ivory spacers. Inside the bowl there is a printed label, which reads: 'Domenico Brambilla in Milano / in Porta Ticinese in Citadella / al Segno della Tromba 1768'. The fingerboard presents ivory, ebony and mother-of-pearl plaques and inlays. The peg box is elongated and surmounted by a mother-of-pearl plaque. The front sides of the two pegbox flanks are decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays. The back of the neck and pegbox are richly decorated with mother of pearl and ivory inlays.
