Het heft bestaat uit vijf in een kring geplaatste vrouwenfiguren. Op hun hoofden bevinden zich vier kinderkopjes, waarop een leeuw zit. De vrouwen stellen de vijf zintuigen voor: vrouw, die met haar rechterhand enige vruchten tegen zich aanhoudt; in haar linkerhand een vrucht, aan haar voeten zit een aap (de smaak). Vrouw, die een vogel op haar arm houdt, die naar haar vinger pikt; aan haar voeten een schildpad (het gevoel). Op een luit spelende vrouw; aan haar voeten ligt een hert (het gehoor). Vrouw met een handspiegel; een adelaar staat aan haar voeten (het gezicht). Vrouw, die een wierookvat draagt: ze houdt in haar rechterhand een bloem; een hond springt tegen haar op (de reuk).

Toelichting

Een zeer verwant messenheft bevindt zich in het Haags Gemeentemuseum. De leeuw is hier vervangen door een zilveren kroon, waarmee het heft op de angel is bevestigd. Zie ook: BK-VBR-299.

Entry

This boxwood knife handle comprises five female figures, placed back-to-back. They symbolize the five senses. Taste is holding fruits in her hand and has a monkey at her feet. Touch has a pecking bird on her arm and a tortoise at her feet. Hearing is playing a lute and has a deer at her feet. Sight is looking in a hand-mirror and has an eagle at her feet. Smell is holding a censer and flower and has a dog at her feet. Above the heads of the five women there are heads of children with a lion on top.

The handle is of a popular type consisting of several female allegorical figures standing back-to-back, usually with children’s or angel’s heads and a lion surmounting them. The type originated around 1600 in the Netherlands or the Rhineland, where imitations were being made until into the eighteenth century sometimes in a different style or with slight variations in composition.¹Cf. R.H. Randall, Masterpieces of Ivory from the Walters Art Gallery, coll. cat. Baltimore 1985, no. 392. The provenance of some of the later examples can be traced directly to Amsterdam.²Cf. J.C. The Hague (Gemeentemuseum) 1972, no. 17a (Amsterdam coat of arms); J. van Trigt, Cutlery from Gothic to Art Deco: The J. Hollander Collection, exh. cat. Ghent (Design Museum Ghent) 2003, no. 163 (the imperial crown is the same as that atop the tower of Amsterdam’s Westerkerk). A knife handle in the Kunstmuseum in The Hague is almost identical to the present object.³J.C. Gallois, Messen en vorken in Nederland, 1500-1800/Knives and Forks in the Netherlands, 1500-1800, exh. cat. The Hague (Gemeentemuseum) 1972, no. 17b. However, instead of a lion it has a small silver crown attaching the handle to the tang.
