macht heimat! [#1]

Abstract

Heimat” – “homeland” is the nearest English equivalent – is a word with such individual connotations that for this very reason it is extremely complex. In Germany it was very controversial until a few years ago, yet in the meantime has become almost a cult. Both here and elsewhere in this age of globalisation it poses a whole array of questions: what is “homeland”? Do we need it and if so, to what degree? Can we “make” a homeland or does it make us? And why does this term exist in its intrinsic meaning only in very few languages? A good reason for the Draiflessen Collection to invite seven artists from different generations and five countries, for whom Heimat is a key theme, to work on the concept of “macht heimat!”. They will produce works in open studios and show them together with the works created previously in their treatment of the theme. Other facets will also be shown in selected artists’ videos and pieces of music. Highlighting other aspects of the theme are films, round-table discussions and an interactive blog, in which visitors can take part as well.
