Abstract

An exhibition (and catalog) where design and art are shown side by side and engage in a dialogue. With shifting scenarios about the human condition, the current zeitgeist, and social context. It shows how art and design have grown closer to each other and how powerful they can form a bond together. How they even need each other and are no longer clearly distinguishable from each other. On the occasion of the acquisition of the Edelkoort Collection, this exhibit asks questions about what a collection actually is and how everyone can give a personal answer. Works that have been collected by various idiosyncratic directors of the Van Abbemuseum meet the autonomous design collection of the visionary former chairwoman of the Design Academy Eindhoven. All have achieved a lot within small budgets. Art and design are often a collection themselves and consist of a grouping or collage of objects or works. This reinforces the image of a collective era. Where chaos is conquered by empathy.
