Abstract
"Andreas Schlüter, Balthasar Permoser, Egid Quirin Asam, Dominikus Zimmermann, Ignaz Günther or Johann Gottfried Schadow: The 18th century has produced countless pioneering sculptors. With this book, for the first time, an overall representation of the extremely innovative and at the same time complex sculptural art production in the German territorial states. In doing so, the 18th century is considered a unit of transition to modernity, making traditions and continuities, fractures and paradoxes fundamentally understandable. The volume offers a conclusive structure of the sculpture according to profane and sacred tasks: personal monuments, tombs, building sculpture, sacral sculpture, busts, garden sculpture and small sculpture are always illuminated against the background of social change. Multifaceted work interpretations and methodical food for thought deepen the epoch overview. Thanks to many years of research and intensive viewing of the originals, the author highly verses the leading formal developments, the iconographic innovations and the aesthetic views of the 18th century." -- Translated from jacket, back cover.
