Abstract
"In recent years, interactive technology, sound art, and immersive experience have emerged as important forms of expression in the Taiwanese contemporary art scene. With the support of the Forward-looking Infrastructure Development Program launched by the Executive Yuan, the Ministry of Culture's sub-program Digital Construction uses the 5G Cultural Technology Talent Cultivation Interdisciplinary Application Program as a starting point to strengthen and promote the use of 5G communication technology in the production of arts and cultural content, while actively encouraging institutions and art groups to engage in interdisciplinary dialogues and connections with the field of technology. In 2020, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA) launched the first edition of the Taiwan International Light Festival, which not only celebrates its fourth anniversary this year, but has also become an important annual event in Taichung. Themed on Scenery of Dataflow, the festival is curated by YEH Ting-Hao and CHIU Chi-Yung. The artworks featured this year emphasize on interactive, immersive, and interdisciplinary qualities, and utilize data as the medium and material to propel artistic creation and visualize light and sound as visible sceneries. Incorporating 5G technology, nine artworks created by Taiwanese and foreign artists are presented in the NTMoFA's outdoor area and the immersive experimental site of technology application--U-108 SPACE. The festival invites the audience to take part in the exhibition and become part of the artworks, thus prompting more and different aesthetic and sensory experiences. During the festival, the NTMoFA also organizes an international forum, which invites Taiwanese and foreign academics, techno-art creators, and artists featured in the festival to discuss topics related to applying 5G technologies in techno-art exhibitions and performances, as well as the sustainable operation of light festivals, engaging the audience in an in-depth dialogue revolving around art, technology and culture that deepens people's knowledge and understanding of interdisciplinary artistic creation. At the same time, the festival offers a wide range of thematic programs, such as workshops, expert guided tours, and simultaneous performances, which also increases the depth and width of the festival in a more comprehensive manner."-- Foreword (page 7).
