Shinkichi Tajiri: the restless wanderer
Alternate title
Restless wanderer
Abstract
Shinkichi Tajiri. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Japanese-American artist Shinkichi Tajiri's birth, The Restless Wanderer is the result of a two-year investigation by Shinkichi's grandchildren, Tanéa and Shakuru Tajiri, into their family history and the impact of their grandfather's self-elected exile on his life, work, family and creative development. Using never-before-seen material from the Tajiri family archives, anecdotes, key works from his oeuvre and works by befriended artists and sources of inspiration, the exhibition and publication offer insight into how Shinkichi incorporated the break with his homeland into his art and how he eventually managed to find his home in Scheres Castle, the place where they spent their childhood and where three generations of Tajiris have lived and worked. Exhibition: Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, The Netherlands (02.12.2023 - 12.05.2024).
