Parents must unite + fight: Hackney flashers: Agitprop, work and socialist feminism in England = Hackney flashers : agitprop, travail et féminisme socialiste en Angleterre

Abstract

In 1975, the Hackney Flashers exhibited their first agitprop work, Women and Work. This series of captioned photographs focused on the wage gap between men and women. To carry out the investigation, the collective visited women's workplaces in the London borough of Hackney, as well as demonstrations where women workers and shopkeepers were demanding better working and living conditions for themselves, their children and their families. The Hackney Flashers dedicate the final Women and Work panel to these joyful struggles: they accompany it with the enthusiastic handwritten caption "There is hope for change, so we've got to fight". This slogan is emblematic of the energy that drives the collective, committed from the outset to an outspoken denunciation of the profound injustices suffered by the women of their neighborhood, while urging us never to give up.
