Abstract

Full-size facsimile reprint of the 4th Exhibition Catalogue of the Franco-Belgian wood cutters/engravers society in Brussels in 1929. This was the first time John Buckland Wright exhibited some of his engravings (four, all titled, of which 2 for "Le Sphynx"). He is listed as a "Xylographe belge" living at 53 Rue Edith Cavell, Uccles, Brussels. This was the exhibition at which the Dutch author Jan Greshoff discovered his work and drew the attention of his publisher-friend A. Stols to it. On the 10th June 1929 Stols wrote a letter inviting JBW to visit him in (nearby) Maastricht and so started their collaboration on Keats' "Collected Sonnets" and JBW's book-illustrative career. The original catalogue of the exhibition was printed in 250 copies on Can-son Velin paper and contains 10 small original woodcuts (alas, none by JBW). It is very scarce. All four sides of the catalogue cover were printed and illustrated with woodcuts and are reproduced on this facsimile covers. --- Size: 20 x 15,2 cm. 20 pp. text (incl.covers) and 10 bl/wh. illustrations.
