Treasures of Daikakuji: from imperial villa to Buddhist temple : special exhibition commemorating the 1150th founding anniversary of Daikakuji
Abstract
"In anticipation of celebrating its 1150th anniversary in 2026, Daikakuji Temple is pleased to present this exhibition showcasing its temple treasures and related works that have been preserved within its hallowed halls. The temple's history is told through outstanding masterpieces, including: the Five Great Wisdom Kings by the sculptor Myōen, an Important Cultural Property exemplifying late-Heian Buddhist statuary; the Biography of the Monk Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) in Emperor Go-Uda's Handwriting, a National Treasure reflecting the emperor's admiration for Kūkai; and the Last Will and Testament in Emperor Go-Uda's Handwriting with His Handprints, a National Treasure conveying his wish for the continuation of the imperial line and the Daikakuji branch of the Shingon school. A particular highlight is the inclusion of paintings mounted on partitions and sliding doors from the Shinden and Shōshinden"-- Foreword (page [2]).
