Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner 1702-1761: Veduten hinter Glas
Abstract
Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner hailed from Ebbs near Kufstein in Tyrol, learned the art of verre églomisé in Salzburg, and settled in Augsburg in 1733. Here, he created a large number of town vedute before he was accepted into the painters' guild in 1746. His townscapes were rich in detail and depicted sometimes imaginary subjects from Naples, Venice, and Paris, which were partly modeled on Melchior Küsel's 'Iconographia'. His elaborate color etching technique makes his verre églomisé works unique. This richly illustrated and illuminating book is the first to present all of Baumgartner's 22 known verre églomisé vedute.
