Abstract

Introducing Stained Glass is one of a series of new books exploring items acquired by the famous 20th-century Glaswegian shipping magnate and philanthropist Sir William and Constance, Lady Burrell, his wife, for their vast collection of art. Following the donation of the entire collection to the City of Glasgow in 1944, it was not until 1983 that the dedicated Burrell Collection opened in Pollok Country Park. This book is the ninth published since the reopening of the museum in spring 2022, allowing readers to marvel anew at the highlights from the decorative arts items amassed by the Burrells. This lavish book features objects dating from the 12th century right through to the 17th century, exploring the whole range of stained glass that the Burrells collected. It provides a definition for what stained glass is, how it's made, the various techniques used in the creation of the glass, and the intricate decoration and artwork of key individual pieces. It will examine the extent and focus of Sir William Burrell's collecting in this area, which is strongest in northern European late medieval glass, whilst also looking at treasures of earlier and later dates. Extensively illustrated in full colour, this book offers readers the latest research on some of the most intriguing pieces.
