Abstract

"Cezanne is often called the first modern painter. But how did he arrive at his unique way of seeing the world, and what was he aiming to express in his art? This book, published to coincide with the major Cezanne retrospective in Paris, London and Philadelphia, sets out to answer these questions. It explores Cezanne's paintings, examines his influences and analyses the artist's own intentions, as well as looking at the different ways in which others have interpreted his work. It looks at Cezanne's theories about colour and perception, and explains how the artist built up the painting.
