Gustav Klimt: The bride
Abstract
"Gustav Klimt’s painting The Bride is one of the most important works by this world-famous artist. It was kept in safekeeping for a long time by Klimt’s life partner Emilie Flöge and is now in the collection of the nonprofit Klimt Foundation in Vienna. This publication looks at the unfinished painting from many different angles. It offers interpretations of its enigmatic content and explores the way Klimt arrived at its complex composition. Klimt made around 120 sketches, in which he carefully studied the positions of the various figures. His last sketchbook also contains many drawings relating to The Bride, which are being presented here for the first time. Another focus is the studio where the picture was painted, Klimt’s last workplace, in the Hietzing district of Vienna. In a photograph by Moriz Nähr, the painting can be seen prominently on an easel inside the studio." -- Provided by Deutsche Nationalbibliothek.
