Abstract
"The area we now know as South Africa has a history of many thousands of years, as rock art of the San people show us. In the seventeenth century, the region faced Dutch colonialism. Most Dutch people probably know that there was a colonial relationship with South Africa, but often refer to the Cape Colony as just a refreshment station on the way to the Dutch East Indies. However, the formal colonial presence of the Netherlands, which lasted 150 years, had a huge impact on South Africa. Anyone walking around Cape Town and consciously looking around will almost stumble over the street names, graves, monuments, buildings and churches that betray Dutch colonial traces. This guide takes us through 80 different locations in The Cape that have a direct link to the slavery past."-- Back cover.
