Gauguin and the contemporary landscape
Abstract
"The exhibition celebrates the art of landscape and explores the enduring influence and appeal of nature on artists working in two distinct periods over a century apart. A highlight is Le toit bleu or Ferme au Pouldu, a rural scene painted by Paul Gauguin in 1890 after he had left behind the booming urban culture of Paris to explore relatively remote, seemingly uncivilised areas of Brittany, becoming the most prominent painter of the Pont-Aven school. Two years earlier, in a letter to Emile Schuffenecker in 1888, Gauguin wrote 'I let myself live in the mute contemplation of nature which provides me the whole of my art.' This sentiment is echoed through the exhibition, which includes works by two contemporary artists who have redefined landscape painting: Peter Dog and Mamma Andersson."-- Introduction (page 3).
