Abstract
"In the 1930s, Sanyu was the first Chinese artist to work with Western intaglio printing techniques. Trained in traditional Chinese calligraphy, seal-engraving and lacquer furniture-making, intaglio printmaking was a natural extension of his artistic output. Without the distractions of material and color, Sanyu’s prints essentialized his preference for simplicity. Following the publication of the catalogue raisonnés of oil paintings, sculptures, drawings and watercolors, Rita Wong has compiled SANYU Catalogue Raisonné: Prints. This volume presents all forty-two of Sanyu’s known prints, most of which have not been seen before. It is hoped that the beauty of these works speaks for itself and will encourage more people to look at the artist within the context of his entire oeuvre"-- Provided by publisher.
