Abstract
First edition of the earliest catalogue of the ducal picture collection in the museum of Darmstadt. The catalogue was compiled by the painter and engraver F.H. Müller (1784-1835) who had been the curator of the collection since 1817. The catalogue was sold at the museum. In his preface Müller notes that he enjoys picture restoration and practised it on some choice examples from the ducal collection. Müller was responsible for rehanging the collection divided into schools: German school from 1770 to 1820 (first room); early German masters (second room); French school (third room); Dutch school (rooms 4-6); and Italian school (rooms 7-9). Each chapter is given an informative introduction. The catalogue describes 600 paintings, giving name of the artist, biographical dates, title of the piece, dimension, medium, and often detailed and critical art historical notes.
