A.R. Penck: Bücher, Filme, Musik, Texte = Books, films, music, texts : Ich aber komme aus Dresden (check it out man, check it out)

Abstract

A new encounter with the exceptional artist Ralf Winkler aka A. R. Penck (1939-2017). This publication looks at Penck's films, music and writing and presents the artist in the Dresden environment that he lived in until his departure from the GDR in August 1980. Those years were crucial to Penck's understanding of art, and Dresden is where he developed his "World and System Pictures", the "Standart" concept and his alter egos. Being refused admittance to the Association of Visual Artists, and deprived of public exhibition opportunities in the GDR, he managed to open, in conjunction with others, opportunities for himself: through jam sessions in the studio, collective (over)paintings with the "Lücke" artist group or by shooting, together with Wolfgang Opitz, Super-8 films. With essays by, among others, Simon Elson, Claus Löser and Pirkko Rathgeber and numerous statements by artist colleagues and companions.
