Abstract

"3 X abstraction presents the extraordinary work of three artists from different generation who have approached non-objectivity and abstraction not as formalism, but as a means of structuring philosophical, scientific, and transcendental ideas. Using line, geometry, and the grid, Hilma af Klint (Sweden, 1862-1944), Emma Kunz (Switzerland, 1892-1963), and Agnes Martin (Canada/U.S., 1912-2004) developed methods of drawing relationships between the phenomenal world and the ideal world in support of the belief that art is fundamentally linked to the forces and processes of life." "This catalogue gathers in its pages the rarely reproduced compositions made by Hilma of Klint between 1895 and 1920; the complex geometrical line tracings of Emma Kunz, exhibited in the United States for the first time; and contemplative early works by Agnes Martin from the 1960s and 1970s.
