Yellow Ruyi Sceptre with Dragons, Bats, and a Crane

anonymous, c. 1875 - c. 1899

From the 15th century yellow enamel glazes derived from iron were made in Jingdezhen. This opaque, brilliant lemon tone is obtained by mixing a lead antimony enamel with a considerable quantity of zinc. This was a difficult and dangerous procedure as the glaze was poisonous.

    Ruyi-scepter van porselein, bedekt met een monochroom geel glazuur. Het ruyivormige deel van de scepter met in reliëf een vijfklauwige draak tussen wolken en vlammen; de steel met een kraanvogel op een rots met planten tussen wolken, vijf vleermuizen rond een 'shou' symbool in een gemodelleerd medaillon, een parel najagende vijklauwige draak tussen wolken en vlammen. Achterzijde ongedecoreerd. Monochromen.
