Writing Box with Paper Tray ‘Pines on a Cliff in the Sea’

Uono Jisei (mentioned on object), c. 1941

The lid of this small writing box features three kinds of surfaces: the rocky outcrops, the sea, and the clouds. The outcrops are made of inlaid lead. The sea was created by working viscous lacquer with a stiff brush and the clouds were applied in two colours of lacquer. In this way, Jisei has attained a particularly expressive representation.

    Op de buitenzijde twee met pijnbomen begroeide rotsachtige eilanden in een onstuimige zee met boven en onder een strook met gestileerde wolken. Binnenzijde: pijnboom kauwende kraanvogels. De suiteki hebben de vorm van de maan. De schrijfbenodigdheden zijn versierd met gestileerde wolkmotieven.
