View from Hippolyte Fizeau’s Window in Paris

Hippolyte Fizeau, 1842 - 1843

This paper print is special. Approximately the same view (the roof with the three skylights) can be seen mirrored in the adjacent daguerreotype. In the early days of photography, making prints from daguerreotypes was not yet feasible. Hippolyte Fizeau, however, attempted to achieve precisely this by experimenting with an etching press. He made this print from an etched daguerreotype plate. The result was razor-sharp, but the tone was not yet uniform.
