Two Putti Sitting on the Backs of Eagles
François Du Quesnoy, 1607 - 1643
The roles are reversed here. Two plump toddlers or putti keep mighty eagles in check. The birds of prey with lightning bolts in their talons are personifications of Zeus, the powerful king of the Greek gods. The Flemish sculptor François du Quesnoy enjoyed great success with such depictions of putti in amusing scenes of excess and playful contrasts. He often drew inspiration from so-called scherzo, the literary genre of intellectual jest.
