Two samples of Telegraph Cable for Mines

unknown, 1865 - 1875

Provenance

…; transferred from the Ministerie van Marine (Department of the Navy), The Hague, to the museum, 1889

Object number: NG-MC-1889-75

Entry

Two samples of telegraph cable for mines.

One is a short piece of shroud-laid copper wire with seven strands, in a thick insulating coating of a black synthetic material (NG-MC-1889-75-1). The other (NG-MC-1889-75-2) has a core of seven copper strands in a thick insulating coating of a black synthetic material and paper.

These samples were found separate and unnumbered and their identification is by a process of elimination. Originally there were five samples for this catalogue number. No historical details are known. This kind of cable was used for the electric detonation of the mine.
