Drie monsters van ijzerkabel, alle kabelslag. Een bestaat uit drie maal drie strengen, ieder uit dertien garens opgebouwd; het heeft een omtrek van twee duim en weegt drie pond de vadem. De andere twee, waarvan een gegalvaniseerd, bestaan uit vier strengen van zeven garens, met een hart van touw; de gegalvaniseerde kabel heeft een omtrek van 1 5/8 duim en weegt twee pond negen ons de vadem, de andere heeft een omtrek van 1 7/8 duim en weegt drie pond twee ons de vadem.

Entry

Three samples of iron cable, all cable-laid.

One cable consists of three times three strands, each strand consisting of thirteen yarns. It has a two-inch circumference and weighs three pounds a fathom. The other two cables, of which one is galvanised, consist of four strands of seven yarns and have a rope heart strand. The galvanised cable has a circumference of 15/8 inches and weighs two pounds nine ounces a fathom, the other has a circumference of 17/8 inches and weighs three pounds two ounces a fathom.

Andrew Smith was one of the major wire rope manufacturers in the United Kingdom and supplier to the British Navy. For his manufacturing process he obtained a patent in 1839.
