The Finding of Moses

Gesina ter Borch, c. 1655 - c. 1656

This is a rare history scene in Gesina ter Borch’s oeuvre. Depicted is the infant Moses being rescued from the Nile by the Pharaoh’s daughter and her maids. With her characteristic attention to human gestures, facial expressions and costume Ter Borch here created a dynamic composition. In the watercolour drawing based on it in her Konstboek (Art Book), she enlarged the figures and omitted the one at the back.
