Sword with equestrian motifs

The many equestrian motifs on this sword suggest that it was once owned by a cavalry officer. Unusually, the scene of a large cavalry engagement extends over both parts of the shell guard. Mounted figures are also incorporated in the deco- ration of the knuckle guard and pommel.

    Het ijzeren gevest is gebeiteld met een ajour bewerkte, bijna driedimensionele figuur van een soldaat in Spaanse uitrusting en een galopperend paard; verder is het gebeiteld in hoogreliëf met ruiters en versierd met drakenkoppen en maskers; op de stootplaat staat een groep ruiters, bovenaan in bas-reliëf, onderaan in hoogreliëf; de houten greep, omwonden met gedraaid ijzerdraad met gevlochten greepringen aan boven- en onderkant, is van latere datum. De tweesnijdige kling heeft een zeshoekige doorsnede die uitloopt in een ruitvorm.
