Study Sheet with Three Views of a Gentleman Walking

Gesina ter Borch, c. 1661 - c. 1669

A fashionably dressed man is depicted from three different sides. Ter Borch first made cursory sketches in black chalk and then added contours and details in red chalk. Such study sheets without a narrative composition are rare in Ter Borch’s oeuvre and afford insight into her working methods. This sheet underscores her interest in natural poses and correctly rendered clothing, as seen elsewhere in her work.
