Still Life with Combs

Kubota Shunman, c. 1820

Looking closely at this print, you can see just how cleverly it is made. The woodcutter and the printer ensured that you can discern exactly what kind of material the hair accessories are made of. In the foreground is an ebony comb inlaid with ivory cherry blossom; behind it is a transparent tortoiseshell comb; and below that a black lacquer comb and an ivory hairpin.
