Sophonisba, een adellijke vrouw uit Carthago, zit aan een tafel. In haar hand de gifbeker waarmee ze zelfmoord zal plegen. Ze besluit de hand aan zichzelf te slaan omdat ze niet gevangen wil worden door de Romeinen.
