Smoking Set
Ikko Hasegawa, c. 1800 - c. 1850
This smoking set was worn at the waist, suspended from a belt. The tobacco container is made of carved bamboo inlaid with a tiger motif. The Dutchman, on top, served as a toggle (netsuke) and when worn was concealed behind the belt. Only his hat would protrude from it, keeping the set from slipping down. The man with a dog in his arms makes a somewhat comical impression.
