Dish for Sweets ‘Cloves’

Akatsuka Jitoku (mentioned on object), c. 1925 - c. 1935

The dish’s slightly irregular surface and its brown colour imitate antique bronze. The rim is decorated with a pattern of cloves. The main characteristic of this dish is its refined shape. The core is not made of wood, but of sheets of hemp cloth soaked in lacquer and hardened over a mould. Using this ancient ‘dry lacquer’ technique Jitoku created a surprisingly modern object.
