Explanatory note

  • NG-MC-957 was een monster van gietijzer dat De Fremery in februari 1859 aan de Modellenkamer aanbood. Het kwam van de mantel van een kanon van 60 pond, dat door Krupp voor de Nederlandse Marine was gegoten, maar wegens een kleine fout bij de tappen werd afgekeurd.

Sample of cast iron, with one rough side, and two opposed curved sides, the one convex and the other concave.

The identification of this particular sample as number 957 on the inventory list, is based on probability only. According to Obreen’s catalogue, number 957 was a sample of cast iron that De Fremery presented to the Navy Model Room in February 1859.2J.M. Obreen et al., handwritten inventory list for items 944 to 1431, 1884, manuscript in HNA 476 RMA, inv. no. 1089, no. 957. It was taken from a 60-pounder gun, which was cast by Krupp for the Dutch Navy but rejected because of a small error at the trunnions.
