Rolschilderingen

Xiang Wenyan, 1850 - 1900

Landscapes. Xiang Wenyan. China. Second half of 19th century. Ink on paper. Two album pages have been joined to form a vertical scroll. Although using only one colour, the artist manages to give the painting tremendous variety. According to the inscriptions the paintings are in the styles of famous artists of the 10th and 13th centuries. Imitating the style of another artist was a painter's way of paying tribute to a famous master.
