Powder flask

Powder flasks not only served a practical purpose but also functioned as accessories that were produced with a great deal of care. This example has been crafted from the shell of a tortoise, a material that overseas trade made available in the Netherlands from the 17th century. On the copper mount is an illegible escutcheon topped by an earl’s coronet.

    Kruitfles vervaardigd van het schild van een schildpad en met koperen beslag. Aan de zijkanten voorzien van twee draagringen. Aan de bovenrand is onder een kroon met parels (gravenkroon) en tussen twee palmtakken het bovenste deel van een naar rechts klimmende leeuw met in zijn klauwen een sikkelvormig voorwerp gegraveerd. Aan de onderrand is ter weerszijden van een puntig ornament een jaartal (?) gegraveerd.
