Portrait of an unknown samurai

attributed to Antoon Bauduin, 1862 - 1866

In the 19th century, taking photos was expensive, laborious and time-consuming. As an amateur photographer, Antoon Bauduin had no need to sell his pictures. Thus, they were never printed in large quantities or sold, and only his descendants had copies. It was pure luck that any of Bauduin’s photographs survived the fire at all.
