Portrait of a Korean Sailor

The Dutch were not the only foreigners in Nagasaki. There was also a large trading settlement of Chinese merchants as well as a Korean community. This image portrays an unidentified Korean man. It is included in Philipp Franz von Siebold’s book Nippon. He was a German doctor in service to the Dutch who stayed on Deshima and described Japan and its culture in this book.

    De geportretteerde is frontaal afgebeeld. Hij draagt een lichte jas zonder knopen. Hij draagt een snor, kleine baard en heeft het haar in een knot op het hoofd. Onder het portret zijn beroep: matroos. De prent is genummerd linksboven: Nippon VII en rechtsboven: TAB. VI.
