Rond patentglas in een houten patrijspoort. Het glas heeft de bolle matte kant naar buiten gewend en is daar in het hout ingelaten, zodat het niet uitsteekt; de rand van het glas is tussen de twee lagen hout ingeklemd. Tussen de lagen hout is een laag karton aangebracht. Buitenop is met krassen een hoefijzervormig beslag aangegeven.

Explanatory note

  • Dit model maakt deel uit van een serie samen met NG-MC-237-1 en NG-MC-237-2, die waarschijnlijk de modellen zijn die besteld werden op grond van het voorstel van P. Schuijt, P. Glavimans Jz. en C. Soetermeer van 1832 voor glazen patrijspoorten in een bovenhoek van de geschutpoorten van linieschepen. Hun voorstel was geïnspireerd op het voorbeeld van de Waterloo (zie NG-MC-235) en volgde op hun beoordeling van de twee lichtglazen van P. Schuijt jr. (NG-MC-238-1 en NG-MC-238-2). Volgens Obreen waren deze patrijspoorten in algemeen gebruik in 1858.

Entry

Round portlight set in a wooden frame. The frosted convex exterior is countersunk so that it does not protrude outside the frame, the rim sandwiched between the two layers of wood. Between the two layers of wood a layer of cardboard has been inserted. A horseshoe-shaped iron is indicated on the exterior with scratches.

Model numbers 236 and 238 as described by Obreen in his catalogue of 18581J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, nos. 236-238. do not agree with the archival evidence2HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, Exh. 28/5/1832 N18. nor with the existing models. This model is one of a series together with NG-MC-236-1 and NG-MC-236-2, which were probably the models ordered after Pieter Schuijt Juniorsz (1797-1885), Pieter Glavimans Jansz (1768-1850) and Cornelis Soetermeer’s (1782-1842) suggestion in 1832 to place portlights in the upper corners of the gun ports of ships of the line. Their suggestion was inspired by the example of Waterloo (NG-MC-235) and followed inspection of the two portlights by Pieter Schuijt Juniorsz (NG-MC-238-1 and NG-MC-238-2). According to Obreen these sidelights were commonly used by 1858.3J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 236.
