Palempore

anonymous, c. 1750 - c. 1775

The decorative motifs and the composition of this Indian chintz most likely betray the influence of the Chinese prototype. Motifs such as bamboo, peacocks, peonies, and garden rocks are traditional patterns in Chinese decorative arts. In Europe palempores were used as wall decoration. This piece is from the collection of Twickel Castle in the Province of Overijssel.
