Getting started with the collection:
Pair of Trays for Kimonos ‘Skunk Cabbage’ and ‘Sunflower’
Takai Hakuyo (mentioned on object), 1937
The large images of a sunflower and an Asian skunk cabbage in true-to-life colours are characteristic of Hakuyo’s work from the 1930s and 1940. These realistic colours were the result of new pigments based on titanium white, which lacquer artists eagerly used. The new lacquer colours replaced the traditional spectrum of gold, silver and black.
